For nonprofits on the IRS Auto-Revocation List
The IRS automatically revokes exemption after three straight years without its required Form 990-series return or e-Postcard (990-N). Reinstatement is possible, and the right route depends on when you act. You choose your route; we type your answers into the forms and templates for it. Your board reviews, signs and files.
What you get
Which one fits depends on which annual return your organization was required to file and how long ago the IRS revoked your status. Summarized from the IRS's reinstatement page (Revenue Procedure 2014-11).
Route 1
For organizations that were eligible to file Form 990-EZ or 990-N for all three missed years and have never been revoked before, applying within 15 months of the later of the revocation letter date or the list date. No reasonable-cause statement needed.
Route 2
For organizations that had to file Form 990 or 990-PF, or were revoked before. Needs reasonable cause for at least one of the three years, plus the missing returns and a signed statement that they've been filed.
Route 3
For applications filed more than 15 months after the later of your IRS revocation letter date or the date the IRS posted your organization on the Auto-Revocation List. Needs reasonable cause for all three missed years, plus the missing returns.
Route 4
The fallback when retroactive reinstatement isn't available: exemption restarts from the date you apply. No reasonable-cause statement needed.
The $49 route checklist sets out the IRS's eligibility questions for each route, with the forms and deadlines the IRS lists for each. You answer them and choose; we don't choose for you.
One fixed price per pack. IRS user fees are separate and paid directly to the IRS: $275 for Form 1023-EZ, $600 for Form 1023 (IRS user fee page).
How it works after you buy: we email you a short intake form. We type your answers, word for word, into the documents for the route you chose, and add the deadlines the IRS sets for that route. Your pack usually arrives within 5 business days of a complete intake; we confirm the date when we receive it. Your board reviews it, signs and files.

Buy retroactive packWhat we don't do: we don't give tax or legal advice, don't choose your route or interpret your answers, don't prepare tax returns, don't sign or file anything for you, and don't represent you before the IRS. We type the information you give us into the documents for the route you chose. If you're unsure which route fits, or your situation needs advice, talk to a tax professional before you buy.
The IRS publishes its Auto-Revocation List and updates it monthly. Search your organization's EIN on it.
It depends on the form and the IRS backlog. Your pack points you to the IRS page that publishes current processing times.
Yes. The IRS's instructions are free. A pack saves your board the research and puts the documents in order.
